Question
Is donating towards the COVID crisis in the UK or elsewhere Zakaat illegible?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sharī`ah has stipulated clear guidelines with regards to the payment of Zakat. Among the fundamental conditions for the fulfilment of Zakat is tamlik, which means that the ownership of the Zakat amount must be transferred over to the eligible recipient.
Therefore, if a person is an eligible recipient of zakat i.e. muslim, poor and needy, one may assist him with zakat money regardless of being affected with the covid-19 crisis or not. However, Zakat money cannot be used for building hospitals, buying test kits, ventilators or any other medical supplies which shall not be given solely to the poor. Similarly, Zakaat funds cannot be given to fundraising drives which are not designed to cater only for the poor.
