Question

Asalaamu alaikum.

Mufti saheb can you please comment and explain the hadith below especially velvet textured clothing and khameesah? In shaa Allah

‘Ruined is the servant of dinar, ruined is the servant of dirham, ruined is the servant of velvet-textured clothes, ruined is the slave of khameesah. Bukhari

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You refer to the following Hadeeth:

Translation: Abu Huraira Radhi Allahu Anhu reported: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasalam, said, “Wretched is the slave of gold, silver, velvet textured clothing, and fine garments. If he is given, he is pleased, but if he is not given, he is displeased.”

(Saheeh Al Bukhari)

Refers to velvet textured clothing.

Refers to stripped superior/fine garments or black robes.

The following points have been deduced by the commentators from the above Hadeeth: [1]

  • It is not appropriate for a true believer to attach himself/herself to this world and make this world his/her main focus of concern.
  • A true believer is always content and pleased with the decision of Almighty Allah.

If one is bestowed with an item, he/she will show gratitude to Allah (Shukr), and if one is deprived, he/she will show patience (Sabr).

  • A believer will always be in the obedience of the Almighty. It should not be such that if one is bestowed with an item, he/she will be obedient and worship Allah Ta’ala. And if one is deprived of an item, he/she will disobey and not worship Allah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
