Question
Salams mufit Sab After the fard salah or any other Salah(i.e. after saying salam), some people make Du’a while others say only Tasbih Fatmi. Some people are adamant that making Du’a after salah is Bid’ah. This is causing some restraint in the community, especially those who follow Imam Abu Hanifah or Ash-Shafi`i.
Can we make dua’a after salah? Can we make dua’a with the imam after salah, together? Jzk
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is sunnah to make individual dua after each fardh salah. This is established from the following ahadith.
Translation: “It was said to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, which dua is accepted most readily? He replied, dua in the last third of the night and immediately after every fardh salah.” (Tirmidhi-3499)
As for collective dua after salah, the default is that it is permissible to do provided one does not consider it to be sunnah, nor does one look down on the one who does not do it. The moment it is considered to be a sunnah or those who do not do so are looked down upon, it will become a bid’ah.[1]
If the purpose of collective dua is to teach the people how to make dua, then this is permissible too. Once the people have learnt, dua should be done individually.
Collective due should also not be done so loudly that it affects the musallees completing their missed salah.[2] However, practically speaking, this defeats the purpose of loud collective dua, hence, it is much better for all (Imam and Musallees) to suffice on the actual sunnah of silent individual dua.
Note: In a congregation, everyone’s needs are bound to be different. Therefore, it is better to make dua individually after salah so that each person makes dua for his own needs.
