Question
What is the ruling on celebrating birthdays in Islam?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The custom of celebrating birthdays is a hallmark of non-Muslims and is therefore impermissible. As Muslims, we are concerned about the hereafter. The prospect of ones looming death is cause to ponder over ones life and what one has prepared for the hereafter, not merriment and excess.
