Question
Assalamu alaikum. Recently, a clean shaven old man was appointed Chairman of the committee of a Masjid. Is this allowed under the shariah? Is this man not a faasiq?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, the affairs of the masjid must be handled by trustworthy, competent people of a Deeni mindset who are atleast conversant with the laws related to the affairs of the masjid and all that it entails or engage with the Ulama to guide them.[1]
It is not permissible to appoint open sinners, untrustworthy people, and those who are ignorant of the laws related to the affairs of the masjid and are not willing to seek guidance from the Ulama. It is permissible to appoint pious, competent, trustworthy non-Ulama who are willing to seek guidance from the Ulama before making any decisions.
If an unworthy person is appointed, he should be removed by the people.[2] If an organisation or community appoint someone who is not suitable for the post, then they will be answerable to Almighty Allah.
