Question
Assalamu Alaikum,
I am an independent Web 3.0 security researcher. Various blockchain and cryptocurrency protocol organizations allow me to identify security vulnerabilities in their systems. However, I am not employed by them nor contractually bound—I operate independently.
My work involves analyzing protocol code, identifying bugs, and responsibly reporting them to help improve their security. If I successfully find a vulnerability, they reward me; if I don’t, I receive no payment.
I do not participate in projects related to gambling, interest-based finance or anything I can easily identify as haram.
Is my income halal?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your job description is analogous to someone working in cyber security. The income is halal.
