Purchasing in instalments

I would like to buy furniture and have the option of paying in instalments. I will pay a deposit and slowly pay back the amount. Is it permissible to do so?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to purchase on an instalment plan provided there is no clause of interest should there be a delay in payment. There are two further possibilities, if the item is handed over, the sale has occurred, and the instalments are a debt on the buyer. If the item is not handed over and shall only be handed over after paying the full amount, then the sale shall only occur once full payment is done. In the interim, the funds given to the seller are an amaanah in his hands.
