Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Nearly half the population of Oman is made up of the Ibadi sect. The Ibadi sect has fundamental theological differences with mainstream Sunni Islam. Whilst we do not know what exactly is believed by the Ibadis in Oman today, it is safest and best to avoid all the meat slaughtered by them.

As for meat and food that is locally hand slaughtered by Sunni Muslims, that remains permissible to consume. It is best to query the chefs etc and find out where the meat is from, and if it is hand slaughtered locally by Sunnis. Some may take offense, but that is no reason to consume potentially Haram food.

As for imported meats, chicken from Brazil is usually machine slaughtered and must therefore be avoided. Lamb and beef imported from Australia or New Zealand would be permissible if it has a Halal stamp from a reliable body in the country of origin.

There is no simple answer as to whether the food is Halal or not. Sadly, this is the situation with all gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia.

The above may serve as guidelines as it is necessary for one to ascertain to the best of his/her ability the status of the food one consumes. Ask for the source of origin and if possible, ask to see a Halal stamp.

Poultry from places like Brazil will not be Halal despite having the Halal stamp as they use machine slaughter. Bigger animals such as lamb, goat, cows etc, are safe from this possibility. However, larger animals have the possibility of being stunned to the extent that they are no longer alive when slaughtered. Therefore, a reliable Halal authority stamp/certificate would be required.
