Question
I work for a company that provides me with accommodation. I also own two houses that are rented out, and I wanted to inquire about the Zakat on the rental income from these houses. Additionally, I have a farm where we raise broiler chickens, but we haven’t received any income from it yet. Could you please clarify how Zakat applies to these situations?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Zakaat is a snapshot calculation as at your zakaat date. Your rental income, if physically with you at that date, will be part of your cash in hand. Similarly, rental that is being owed by tenants as at that date will be part of your debtors. Rental income you received but spent before your zakaat date will be disregarded.
As for broiler chickens, they will be treated as stock in trade, therefore, their value will be added to your zakaat calculation at your zakaat date.[1]
