Question

Can i meet my spouse after nikkah without rukhsati and without my wali’s (father) permission?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Once nikah is done, the spouses are Halal for each other. Meeting the spouse, having the company of the spouse, and intimacy with one’s spouse are all fundamental objectives of nikah. These are not dependent on rukhsati. For this reason, the ideal is that rukhsati be done immediately after nikah.

If your father has prohibited you from meeting your spouse solely due to cultural norms, then this is not right. If possible, it should be explained to him by a scholar that stopping lawful interaction between spouses possesses no benefit and is therefore not permissible. However, if the father is doing so due to some valid reasons such as non-payment of mahr, or pending fulfilment of certain conditions stipulated within the nikah contract, then one should abide by the fathers’ injunctions. It would not be prudent to bring down the anger of one’s father so soon after getting married, even if the anger is unwarranted.
