Question
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
I am currently 4 months postpartum
After my nifaas period, I continued having yellow discharge daily (every Salaah time) till yesterday when I spotted a little blood and have been spotting every Salaah time since.
So, I took as istihadha, and as of my haidh habit before pregnancy, I took a 19 day pure period followed by a 10 day haidh period from after my nifaas till current day.
However, I came across something that said if yellow discharge is something normal and everyday then I shouldn’t consider it as istihadha and must just take it as pure. Please guide me as to what to do.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The default rule is that discharge of all colours besides clear and white are considered impure and either haidh or istihaadha.[1] When it comes to yellow discharge, there are two possibilities:
- The discharge is actually clear or white and then oxidises on one’s underwear, which gives it a yellow tint. This will not be considered for haidh/istihaadha. It is subject to the laws of vaginal discharge. (See link below)
- Discharge that is actually yellow. If a woman regularly experiences yellow discharge throughout the year, even during her days of purity, then for her, yellow discharge will neither be haidh nor istihaadha. It will be subject to the rules of vaginal discharge.
In the enquired situation, if you used to experience regular yellow discharge even before pregnancy, or, many months have passed since birth, and you still experience yellow discharge regularly, then you will consider it as the second possibility above. However, if this is not the case, then you will consider it to be haidh/istihaadha.
For rulings on vaginal discharge, refer to the link below.
