Question
Are you allowed to make money out of photography?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The laws of photography are divided into two.
- Photography of inanimate objects such as tress, stones etc. These are permissible to take, keep and sell. Earnings from such photography will be permissible.
- Photography of animate objects such as humans, animals etc.
Although there exists a difference of opinion in the act of taking digital photographs of animate objects, in the event such photographs themselves are the object of a sale, as is the case with your query, our view is that earnings from the sale of such photographs will not be permissible.[1] This is further exacerbated when the photos are lewd in nature.
