Question
Assalamualaikum,
I would like to know if I, as a male, am able to wear a ratchet ring made of stainless steel, coated with carbon, used primarily as a fidget toy. I have been told that men are not allowed to wear gold but I would like to confirm before I make the purchase of this ring as it is expensive.
I am not intending to wear this as jewellery, although it does look like a normal ring. My primary purpose is to use it as a fidget toy as it is conveniently on my finger.
You can find a link to the website for this product below, thank you for considering this question and I await your response.
Kind regards,
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
We have seen the product in reference. Given that it looks exactly like a ring and is worn just like a ring, it is not permissible to wear as it is not made of silver.[1]
However, if there are proven medical benefits for people who suffer from anxiety, then as a medical aid, it will be permissible to use. We did not come across any research to back this, therefore, one should not wear the ratchet ring and instead consider alternatives which are either made out of silver or aren’t rings.
