Question
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
The ruling of the maliki madhab is that a woman in haidh can touch the Quran and read if she is a student/teacher. I have come across a fatwa from the MJC which permits it due to need.
Can this ruling be adopted by Huffadh following the Hanafi Madhab?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In the Hanafi madhab, it is not permissible for a woman on her menses to touch or recite Quran. This is proven from multiple ahadith. Despite the presence of female huffadh in the times before, no leeway was given for them to do so during haidh. Therefore, it will remain impermissible for Hanafi’s.
You may explore the following methods instead.
- Listen to someone else recite the Quran to keep one’s memory.
- Look inside the Quran without touching it and without reciting by moving the lips.
A woman teaching Quran may also break on each word of the Quran so that it is not counted as recitation.
