Question
Assalamualaykum ww
Are semi-permanent hair dyes permissible to use?
Is there a way to tell if the hair dye is water permeable by checking the ingredients?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is permissible for a woman to dye her hair to beautify herself for her husband on condition the dye is not black in colour and the dye does not contain any impure or harmful ingredients.[1]
Furthermore, a woman is not permitted to expose her hair to non-Mahrams.
Most dyes are permeable. However, one may contact the manufacturer to ascertain if the dye is permeable or not. Alternatively, one can google the ingredients to see if any ingredient is used as a waterproofing agent.
