Interest funds to animal welfare

Question

Assalamualaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

Can we donate interest money to animal welfare organisations?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Interest money is to be disposed off by giving it to poor people who own less than nisaab.[1] It cannot be given to an organisation or individual who is not poor even if they will use it for animal welfare.

As a side note, it is better to feed poor Muslims as opposed to animal welfare.
