Selecting a halal authority

Question

What criteria should I consider when selecting a halal certification authority, and how should I proceed if different authorities have conflicting rulings?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Most of us are not aware of the various intricacies behind halal certification. Therefore, our only course of action is to rely on halal authorities run by Ulama and Muftis we can place our confidence in. If we do not know anything about a particular authority, but other reliable Ulama and Muftis we do know place their trust in that body, then that too is fine.
