Question
Question: Umrah or charity
Assalamualaikum,
Alhamdulillah I donate 10% sadaqah of my total income every month. The total amount of this sadaqah is enough for my family to perform umrah every year. My question is, should I continue giving out charity or I put aside this money and perform umrah after there’s sufficient funds for my family to perform umrah? Or I can donate 2-3% of my income and use the remaining 7% for umrah?
Jazākallāh
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The default in voluntary good deeds is that catering to the need of the time/place is preferable. Therefore, if someone has needy family members, or a close friend in need, or teachers/students in need etc, then it is better to give them sadaqah to help them instead of performing nafl umrah. If one is able to do both, then ofcourse that is better. If it is a choice between one or the other, then the fulfilment of someone else’s needs will take preference.
