Keeping the name Ayah

Hope you are well. I wanted guidance on a name that we wanted to give our baby.

Is the name ‘Ayah’ a good name to keep?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The word ‘Aayah’ (pronounced as aa-yah(yuh) as opposed to aa-yaa) means sign. It is a permissible name to keep for one’s child. However, it is better to keep the names of sahabah and prophets, and names that do not sound eerily similar to non-Muslim names.
