Question
Is sushi halal?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The Hanafi madhab only permits what is categorised as ‘fish’ from the sea animals to be consumed. Some sea creatures such as octopus, oysters, crabs, lobsters are not fish, hence not permissible to consume.
Sushi is made with different types of fish/sea animal meat and other ingredients. Provided only fish is used and no other Haram ingredient, such as rice wine is used, then the sushi will be halal.
