Question

Assamulalaikum ww

a Resturant was advertising its food with the halal certified logo on it. I went to that Resturant after ordering food i checked that they was no halal certificate in the Resturant but I didn’t think much.
after going home I was still having doubts so I asked the halal Certifiers if this Resturant is halal and they replied saying it’s not halal certified by them.

I am now regretting eating at that restaurant I had doubts but I still ate. Is my ibaada going to be accepted i feel ashamed and made taubah but every time I pray salaah or make dua the Hadith of my deeds not being accepted for 40 days comes in my mind.

By making istigfaar will my Duas and good deeds be accepted?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Firstly, one ought to differentiate between ‘Halal’ and ‘Halal certified’. A restaurant not being Halal certified does not mean that it is Haram. Ofcourse, for one’s own assurance and convenience, it is easier to abide by certifications of a reliable body one has trust in.

As for non-certified restaurants, if one does some due diligence such as checking the food and how it is prepared, or knowing the owner, or knowing the supplier, then provided one is content with this diligence, then the food will be Halal. At the same time, one needs to be conversant with common affairs of the food industry such that one is able to ascertain what is correct and what is misleading information.

Nevertheless, coming to your actual query, given that such food was consumed, if you have doubts that it could possibly be Haram, then make sincere tawbah and istighfaar. Almighty Allah does not take one to task for errors in judgement that were done out of good faith. If you are certain that your due diligence was good enough, then Insha-Allah, the food is Halal. Then too, make tawbah and istighfaar as one is still in need of the mercy of Almighty Allah.
