Question
Is it permissible to choose the gender of a child if a couple, due to necessity, is undergoing IVF treatment?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
IVF treatment is only permissible due to necessity in instances where a couple is unable to have a child via the normal method.
The basic principle is that permission granted due to necessity is confined to the necessity. Therefore, while it may be permissible for a couple unable to have children to undergo IVF treatment, it will not be permissible to go the extra step and choose the gender or finetune the genes in the child.
