Question
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Mufti saheb if a person has a wheel which they can spin and they’ll then get a prize, and they’re spinning the wheel for free. In the same way how that’s halal, if a person downloads a betting app and it has free 50 spins on a wheel which we don’t have to pay for, then is that permissible to keep the money?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Whilst the first situation is correct in the sense that a free chance to win something is permissible provided one stakes no money on it, the second will be impermissible as one is still making use of a gambling app which in turn has a strong chance of leading one into real gambling. What leads to Haram is also Haram.[1]
It would take a special kind of naiveté to think that the powers that be in the gambling world are offering free spins out of the goodness of their hearts. They know exactly the type of addiction that is created by these things.
Furthermore, can one fathom a good Muslim who has a betting app on his phone?
