Question
Assalamu ‘alaykum,
Please could you answer this as Ramadan is in 1 day and I don’t know if this will break my fasts.
Sometimes when I wake up, I’m unsure if I had a wet dream and so I gently squeeze my private part to check whether any liquid comes out. This is not done with any intention of sexual stimulation, and I do not feel any desire or pleasure when doing it. I am only trying to confirm whether discharge occurred during sleep. Sometimes my suspicions are correct and a white liquid comes out although, I can’t tell if it’s maniy or madhy but as per the Hanafi fiqh, any presence of liquid requires ghusl.
Does the mere act of squeezing to check for discharge without pleasure invalidate the fast?
I’ve read that madhy is impure. When it gets on my bedsheets, it dries up very quickly. I’d go do ghusl and pray, and then when I come back, the stain is invisible and I can’t feel any wetness on the bedsheets. Do the bedsheets need to be washed or is it fine to sleep on as a dried impurity can’t transfer to another surface? Likewise, if madhy got onto my pyjamas and then it quickly dries up without leaving a visible stain or moisture, can I wear them again for sleeping? I of course don’t pray in these clothes
Jazakum Allahu khayran.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Your understanding of the laws pertaining to your situation is incorrect.
Only the expulsion of Mani (semen) requires a ghusl. Everything else, like urine, only requires wudhu. Neither of the two will have a bearing on a fast. The fast remains intact in your situation, whether Mani or Madhi.
Madhi is impure and needs to be cleaned. If it dries up and one cannot see it, the assumed area can be wiped and cleaned. The impurity if less than the size of a dirham (the inner scoop of ones palm) is forgiven. Furthermore, dry Madhi will not transfer as you have stated. Therefore, there is no reason to keep washing things for no reason.
Upon awakening, if you do not see and feel any wetness on your sheets, they are pure. Similarly, if you do not know whether you had a dream or not, there is no reason to check this by squeezing. Simply rely on the facts available upon awakening. Is the bedsheet dry? If yes, then there is nothing. If no, then check and see whether it is semen or not. Semen will leave a white mark. If it is semen, then perform ghusl and wash the affected area of the sheet.
As for the fast, if one began a fast in the state of janabah, the fast is valid. If one had a dream during the day and ejaculated, the fast is still valid.
Do not overthink these things. Deen is easy and Almighty Allah has not placed unwarranted difficulty onto His slaves.
