Zakaat if a person is in debt

Question

Does a person have to give zakat on money he owes to someone?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The calculation of Zakaat at ones Zakaat anniversary date is as follows:

Zakatable assets less liabilities = Nisaab amount or higher, then Zakaat is due.

If, Zakatable assets less liabilities = Less than Nisaab amount, no Zakaat is due.

The debts a person owes to others will form part of his liabilities.
