What should be done with Hajj pelting stones brought back home

Question
Someone recently returned home from hajj with a few pelting stones.
What must be done with them?
If they have to be taken back then where should they be left specifically?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is permissible to take and keep stones or soil from the Ḥaram of Makkah outside its boundaries. If such stones have already been brought home, there is no Shar‘i obligation to return them to Makkah.[i]
Should a person nevertheless wish to return them out of personal caution or peace of mind, the stones may be placed anywhere within the boundaries of the Ḥaram. There is no requirement that they be returned specifically to the Jamarāt or to any other particular location.
Furthermore, no expiation (dam) or other penalty is due for taking or possessing such stones outside of Makkah.
