Question
Aslm
Please advise if the total contribution at NAPSA so far must be included when calculating ones yearly zakaat amount. In theory it is like a forced savings account and money that will potentially be paid back to you or your beneficiaries when the time comes.

Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
NAPSA is Zambia’s mandatory pension scheme. Mandatory contributions are made monthly before an employee even receives his net wage. Furthermore, the individual has no control over how these funds are invested.
From an Islamic perspective, these deductions mean the wages do not enter into the ownership of the employee and will therefore be exempt from Zakat.[1] In the event one receives a payout from NAPSA in whatever form, it will be Halal to keep. This payout will become part of your cash in hand/cash in bank, and you will only calculate your Zakat once the Zakat Anniversary arrives as normal.
