Question
Assalamualaikum.
Hope Mufti Saheb is well.
The Ministry of Health in Zambia runs a mandatory Health insurance scheme with all employees. The scheme operates such that monthly 2% of a person’s wages are deducted and deposited into this scheme. 1% is contributed by the employer and 1% by the employee.
Kindly shed some light on whether as Muslims we are allowed to benefit from such a scheme and up to what amount can we benefit?
Jazakumullah
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The health insurance scheme has been mandated by the government and is therefore permissible to make use of.
Given that a portion of one’s salary is cut before one even receives it, it is permissible to make use of all benefits provided under the health scheme, no matter the cost/amount.[1]
