Question
A man often came to our house.
He sometimes sat beside me and took my books in his hand to see them during my study. Recently, I have come to know that he is an immoral person ( looks for chances to commit zina and I have been quite sure about it).
My problem is that, now, when I try to sit for study, my books remind me of him. I’m mentally obstructed. My exam is knocking at my door but I cannot open my books. It’s mentionable that I’m suffering from mental illness. Please advise me what should I do now.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Respected Brother/Sister,
Firstly, we would like to point out that as a Muslim, one must try their level best to abstain from harboring evil thoughts regarding their fellow Muslims. No matter what happens, one must keep their mind free from evil thoughts regarding others.
A pious man said, even if I were to see a wine dripping from a man’s beard, I would assume someone spilled it on him, not that he drank wine himself. This is the attitude that is becoming of a Muslim.
The first step would be to rid your mind of such thoughts regarding that individual. We have not even touched the topic of verifying information that reaches one’s ears, especially of such a nature.
Secondly, you must remember that Shaytaan is always trying to delude man and turn him away from productive behavior. Studying for school or madrassah would most definitely be considered as a productive use of one’s time which is why Shaytaan aims to break your concentration and focus.
Do not give in. We advise you to recite the Ayatul Kursi and the Muawwidhatayn (Surah Kaafiroon, Ikhlaas, Falaq, Naas) before you start studying. This will aid in combating the whispers of Shaytaan.
You state that you also suffer from mental illness. We do not know what you mean by that. If that is the case, we advise you to seek medical help also. All these methods when applied together should adequately push away the whispers of Shaytaan.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
