Praying Sunnah vs praying Quran

Question

Is it better to perform the Sunnah ghayr Muakkadah before Asr and Isha or to recite Quran instead?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اسْتَقِيمُوا وَلَنْ تُحْصُوا، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ أَعْمَالِكُمْ الصَّلَاةَ، وَلَا يُحَافِظُ عَلَى الْوُضُوءِ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنٌ

Translation: “Adhere to righteousness though you will not be able to do all good deeds. Know that from the best of actions is Salah. And no one maintains his wudhu (all the time) except a believer.” (Ibn Majah-278)

Recitation of Quran inside Salah is better than recitation outside Salah. Therefore, it will be better to prefer the sunnah salah over recitation.
