Kissing the Quran and placing it on the forehead

Question

Is there are shar’i basis for kissing the Quran and placing it on the forehead before/after recitation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Kissing the Quran and placing it on the forehead out of respect is permissible. This practice is found from the sahabah. It is reported that Ikrimah Radhiyallahu Anhu would pick up the Quran and place it on his forehead saying “This is the speech of my Lord. This is the speech of my Lord.”[1]

1018 – حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُسَاوِرٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ، ثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ خِدَاشٍ، ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ أَبِي جَهْلٍ إِذَا اجْتَهَدَ فِي الْيَمِينِ قَالَ: ” وَالَّذِي نَجَّانِي يَوْمِ بَدْرٍ، وَكَانَ يَأْخُذُ الْمُصْحَفَ وَيَضَعُهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ وَيَقُولُ: «كَلَامُ رَبِّي كَلَامُ رَبِّي»
