Question
Does water pass through lotion and Vaseline and through which types of oils does it not pass?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Most body application lotions are permeable in nature and allow water to pass through. Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) prevents water from reaching the skin if applied as a thick layer. A thin layer would be washed off very easily and as such would not prevent water from reaching the skin.
As for body oils, thin oils which are quickly absorbed by the body do not prevent water from reaching the skin. However, some oils which create a layer over the skin may only allow water to reach through by rubbing the skin when washing it.
