Question
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
I hope this question finds Mufti Saheb in the best of health and Imaan
I wanted to ask regarding the anasheed Assalamu Alayka, Ya Nabi Salaam Alayka and Ya Man Salayta.
It had been brought to my attention previously that it may or may not be correct to listen to it due to the يا address – and the Aqeedah issues attached to it. However, I’ve seen madaaris sing these, so I’d like an official Fatwa if possible.
Is it permissible or advisable to listen/sing such?
Jazakallahu Khayran
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The word “Yaa” in Arabic is used to call out to someone who is present and translates as “O” in English i.e., to hail someone.
If a person says “Yaa Nabi” with the belief that he is physically present infront of him, then this is a bid’ah and incorrect belief. This is not permissible.
However, another scenario is where a poet or a lover says “Yaa Nabi” or “Yaa Rasulallah” simply as a method of evoking his emotions, similar to when a person calls out to the mountains or the winds or the sun and moon, not with any belief attached to it, rather as a means of pouring out his heart for whatever reason, in this situation, it is permissible to call out “Yaa Nabi” or “Yaa Rasulallah” provided the incorrect belief alluded to above is not present.[1]
