Question
Assalamu Alaykum Mufti Sahib,
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Islam emphasizes that Muslims should have good names and give good names to their children.
It is the infant’s vested right to be honoured with a good name. When choosing a name for the child, it should be done with the intention that the child will be blessed with the barakah of that name.
Consider the following hadeeth:[1]
Translation: On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names.
(Sunan-Abu Dawood, Kitaabul Adab)
The name Shigufta means ‘one with a beaming face’.[2] It is pronounced with a kasra on the sheen.
An alternative is Shagoofa which means ‘bud or flower’.
The name of a person has an effect on the individual’s personality and his/her characteristics. Therefore, we advise you to adopt the names of the companions (Sahabaah/Sahabiyyaah) of Nabi (ﷺ).
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
