Dua after salah

Question

If the Imam is making congregational dua after completion of the salaat, then is it preferable for one to join in the dua or make his own individual dua?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Individual dua after salah is proven explicitly from the ahadith. Dua in congregation is simply a permissible method which holds no additional virtue of its own.

Given the fact that dua is meant to be personalised as individual needs vary, it is better to make dua individually as one would be practicing on the actual hadith as well as achieving the objective of dua. Alternatively, one may begin the dua with the Imam, then carry on even after he has completed the congregational dua.
